How to Fish with Live Bait in Shallow Texas Marshes

I mainly fish the shallow marshes along the Texas Coast, where the water is usually less than 3 feet deep. In these skinny-water conditions, live bait is often the key to success.Here’s how I catch fresh bait in the marshes, along with my two favorite ways to rig and fish it effectively.
1. Carolina Rig (Fish Finder Rig)The Carolina Rig is one of my go-to setups in the marshes. It’s simple but highly effective: a sliding egg sinker on the main line, followed by a swivel, then an 18-inch leader tied to a hook.I prefer using a live finger mullet on this rig. I hook it through the underside near the tail so it naturally swims upward (if hooked on the top, it tends to swim down). Because the sinker slides freely on the line, the mullet can swim around naturally while the weight stays pinned to the bottom. I can also let out more line to give the mullet a wider swimming radius. This natural presentation drives redfish and speckled trout absolutely crazy.
2. Popping Cork (or Sliding Float)My second favorite rig is fishing live bait under a popping cork. I use a 1/8 oz jig head on an 18-inch leader below the cork. This setup is deadly with live shrimp, but it also works great with small baitfish like pinfish, croakers, and finger mullets. The popping action attracts fish from a distance, while the suspended bait below seals the deal.
